Web Not Much of a Draw for Magazines

….Only two of 75 magazines launched or announced in the first quarter of the year had anything to do with technology. The Magazine Publishers of America reported the most popular categories for new publications were shopping, city guides, and shelter. Nick Denton's Gawker Media, best known for its Weblogs including Wonkette.com, will begin publishing, "Boink," according to the trade group. It will be produced by students at Boston University and feature profiles and photos of students with articles focused on sex and politics. Meanwhile, SSC Publishing began publishing TUX, billed as "first and only magazine for the new Linux user and is dedicated to promoting and simplifying the use of Linux on the desktop." More…

New York, NY (May 3, 2005)—Seventy-five magazine launches were announced in the first quarter of 2005, according to research conducted by Magazine Publishers of America (MPA). They range in focus and type from magazines dedicated to heritage and culture, to titles that target niche affluent markets.
