Instead, consider that this Sunday's holiday brings a flood of new books timed for gift-giving, because the period from Mother's Day to Father's Day is second to Christmas in book-buying activity.

According to a survey done in early April for the National Retail Federation, Mother's Day purchases of books and CDs are expected to total $606 million, or 5.3% of the $11.43 billion in holiday spending.

At the same time, 28.5% of Mother's Day shoppers plan to buy books and CDs for mom this season.
