Magazine gives bikes to 50 to push pedaling
Louisville among 20 'BikeTowns'

Fifty people stood in line at Jefferson Square yesterday, having little more in common than a desire that would have them wear bike helmets rather than seat belts.
A mother of two, a Louisville Metro government employee and a legally blind man were among those waiting to get new bicycles as part of Bicycling magazine's "BikeTown USA" program, marking the end of National Bike to Work Week. The magazine chose 20 cities for that designation this year, with the goal of promoting cycling and using bikes to change those communities.
Half the winners will participate in a bike-to-work program, and the other 25 people will use their new Schwinns for exercise or recreation. The magazine will track each person's experience over the coming months.
"There seems to be more energy, more momentum, than ever before" to "pedal commute" to and from work, Mayor Jerry Abramson said. The city was selected for the program because it is becoming more bike-friendly. More…
