In a run of 80 years celebrated this month in a special anniversary issue, Arizona Highways has established itself as the best scenic photography travel magazine on the planet - heck, make that the known universe.
It's also the best deal in state government.
Arizona owns the magazine and the Arizona Department of Transportation manages it, without any of the normal coils of bureaucracy. The magazine exists to promote travel to and through Arizona and bolsters the economies of hard-pressed rural communities.
The magazine has nearly 300,000 subscribers living on every continent in 130 countries and all 50 states. It's one of the nation's few successful magazines without advertising.
